3 more tips to get your toddler to sleep
Continuining the earlier post, here are three more tips to get your toddler to sleep without tears:
- Try to keep the bedtime routine consistent. It has a much higher success rate if it doesn’t vary much from night to night. New events and deviations from the norm can excite your child.
- Another one that should go without saying, avoid exposing your toddler to anything potentially upsetting on television.
- You may have heard that the best way to get your child to learn to sleep on their own is to let them “cry it out”. This strategy can be effective in some cases, but it can also be too upsetting for some children. For young children that are a bit more delicate, a gradual method may be called for. Try sitting with your child for a couple nights until he or she falls asleep. The next night or two, shorten the amount of time that you spend in your child’s room gradually. Eventually get to the point where you’re saying goodnight from the hallway, and maybe offer a reassuring “mommy’s here” or “daddy’s here” at first. Although this method seems long and trying, it really pays off once the child is accustomed to sleeping on their own. A full night of uninterrupted sleep will definitely make it all seem worthwhile!
