Sleeping through the night - review
As soon as you get a new baby home, and have got over the usual “boy or girl?” questions, the next question that people ask is “how are you sleeping now your new baby is in the house?” The answer is normally along the lines of “sleep? What’s that?”. According to recent studies, up to a quarter of young children have sleep problems, and that always translates into parents not getting much shut-eye either. Sleep deprivation can make you very edgy, and really detract from the pleasures of bringing up a youngster.
In “Sleeping through the night”, Dr Jodi A Mindell gives us the benefit of her 10 years’ work in the field of child sleep problems. She gives excellent answers to frequently asked questions, and also offers tips and methods to help your toddler get a more restful night. The book is well illustrated with case studies, and some words from parents who have conquered their babies and toddlers night-time difficulties.
This book is a little more comprehensive than many other works on the subject, as the author gives advice on how to “set things up” properly at bedtime, as well as just in dealing with midnight wakefulness. She also offers tips on how to deal with the stress of having a baby who doesn’t sleep, whilst you are getting them into a proper pattern of resting. This is important, as stressed out parents can often transmit their stress to the baby, creating a vicious circle.
