Which size sleeping bag should I get for my toddler?

tag Tags: 3 years, parents, sleeping, toddlers

One of the most important factors to be taken into account when purchasing a sleeping bag for your child should be size. For older toddlers, say between 18 months and 3 years, getting a slightly larger than necessary size might not be a bad idea, considering your child is rapidly growing. However, when buying a sleeping bag for a young toddler or especially an infant, it is imperative that you don’t get one that is too large. An oversized sleeping bag carries the risk of the baby falling down inside, creating a potential hazard.

Of course, you don’t want a sleeping bag that is too small either. The main problem being that it could simply be too uncomfortable. An uncomfortable child is prone to not sleep well as a result of this discomfort, and this can definitely have a significant impact on the total sleep of his or her parents!

Another factor is how compactable the sleeping bag is. Bags made with down can typically be compacted and stored in much smaller places than the bulkier sleeping bags made with synthetic fill. Down bags are also usually warmer, but they tend to be more expensive than bags with synthetic fill of similar comfort levels. Also, sleeping bags made with down are significantly lighter, which might be an important factor if you’re planning on traveling frequently.

Keep in mind that the bigger a sleeping bag is, the more space there is that your child will need to heat up to remain warm. Smaller sleeping bags are easier to warm up, and are considered better for extremely cold temperatures. Unless you’re planning on going camping, this won’t be too big of a factor, but it’s worth mentioning.

Check with the sleeping bag manufacturer to get specific information about which sizes are appropriate for your child’s age range. Size categories may vary slightly from company to company.
